Golden Valley & West Metro

  • The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office says investigators found 59.6 pounds of methamphetamine — nearly 60 pounds — along with nearly 2 pounds of cocaine inside a Golden Valley apartment last week, according to KSTP. It's a strikingly large seizure for a suburban apartment community.
  • Separately, law enforcement is working to learn more after a man was found dead in a Golden Valley lake Wednesday morning. The Sheriff's Office Water Patrol was requested at about 7:25 a.m.; no additional details have been released. No lake was named in the initial report.
  • Otherwise, today's batch was quiet for Robbinsdale, Crystal, New Hope and St. Louis Park.

Minneapolis

  • The BCA says the suspected shooter in Wednesday afternoon's mass shooting — which KARE 11 places in the Loring Park neighborhood — was killed in an exchange of gunfire with MPD officers. Two people were killed and six injured, including two officers struck by gunfire. KSTP reports the incident began as a child custody exchange.
  • Court records reviewed by KSTP's 5 INVESTIGATES show the man identified by witnesses as the shooter, 35-year-old Carlton Johnson II, had a history of making threats and was subject to restraining orders. KARE 11 reports he was in the process of being evicted.
  • Residents of Shoreline Plaza told KSTP they had complained to property management for years as police calls piled up — 438 in two years — with one asking, "Are we going to keep losing lives here?"
  • One of those killed was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran; his family, including Sarah Parsons and her son Anthony Milton, spoke with reporters outside the now-crime-scene building. KSTP reports the shooting is also putting new focus on Minnesota's "red flag" law and landlords' gun policies.
  • In a separate case, an ICE officer, Christian Castro, has been charged with making false statements to federal investigators in the January shooting of Julio Sosa-Celis in Minneapolis. An AP source tells KARE 11 that Castro turned himself in to federal authorities after Texas' governor refused to sign an extradition warrant sending him to Minnesota.

  • Overnight, scattered showers and storms moved mainly north of the metro, where severe storms came in rounds across northern Minnesota, per KSTP meteorologists. Expect the heat to be the story locally today.
