The headline story for Golden Valley readers comes from KARE11: Sanford and North Memorial have agreed to a decade of oversight from the Minnesota attorney general in connection with their merger. As part of the agreement, the health systems committed $500 million to Maple Grove Hospital and $100 million to Robbinsdale Hospital — significant money for the North Memorial campus that serves Golden Valley, Robbinsdale, Crystal, and New Hope families.
Minneapolis
Remembering Annunciation. One year after a shooter opened fire at a back-to-school mass at Annunciation Church on Aug. 27, 2025 — killing 10-year-old Harper Moyski and 8-year-old Fletcher Merkel — the community marked the anniversary. Neighbors gathered at Pearl Park for acts of kindness benefiting the community, and a Minneapolis man is attempting a triple Ironman as part of a fundraising effort, backed by donors from the Twin Cities and across the country, to support students' mental health. Neighbors in south Minneapolis say they've banded together over the past year to support Annunciation families, and one Minneapolis SWAT officer reflected on responding that morning: "That's never leaving my head."
Public safety. Minneapolis police are investigating two killings. The death of Abdiwahab A. Isse — found dead in an apartment in July after what was initially reported as an overdose and deemed a "suspicious death" — is now being investigated as a homicide. Separately, a man died Friday morning after officers found him with life-threatening gunshot wounds in the driver's seat of a vehicle. Also: three kids — boys ages 11 and 12 and a 16-year-old girl — were detained Tuesday morning about three blocks from where multiple vehicles were damaged in south Minneapolis.
City Hall. The Minneapolis City Council unanimously approved an ordinance covering nondisclosure agreements and data centers; it still needs Mayor Jacob Frey's signature before taking effect.
Elsewhere in the metro: KSTP reports Wesley Al McDaniel, 36, of New Brighton is charged by warrant with two counts of attempted first-degree murder and remains on the loose after allegedly stabbing and seriously injuring two people he was staying with in Coon Rapids. And the State Patrol says a man was killed around 1:59 a.m. Friday in Scott County after he exited his stopped car on U.S. Route 169 and was struck by another vehicle.
St. Paul
St. Paul police released two videos — body-camera footage and nearby surveillance — showing the moments leading up to an officer shooting and injuring a domestic assault suspect outside Regions Hospital earlier this month, including the moment shots were fired. In a happier recovery, police found the Suni Lee statue that went missing from Phalen Regional Park on July 31, 2025, and a man has been arrested.
Local Sports
Twins: The AL Central-leading White Sox beat Minnesota 7-4 Friday night, with Colson Montgomery hitting his 28th homer and Andrew Benintendi driving in two runs. The bigger storyline for the home crowd: the Twins officially selected top prospect Walker Jenkins from Triple-A St. Paul — Alan Roden was sent down to make room — and Jenkins made his MLB debut Friday at Target Field, telling KSTP he's embracing the moment after his call-up.
Vikings: Sam Ehlinger threw three touchdowns, including an 88-yard strike to rookie tight end Justin Joly, as the Broncos routed the Vikings 34-6 Friday night in Denver.
Hockey note: Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar signed an eight-year, $163.2 million extension Friday — the richest deal in NHL history, per AP, making him the league's highest-paid player.
Minnesota Statewide
Republican State Rep. Elliott Engen pleaded guilty Thursday, ahead of a scheduled pretrial hearing, and was sentenced to a year of probation for his March DWI arrest; he'd been pulled over for speeding, expired registration, and an inoperable headlight. In other news: Minnesota civil rights leaders say "we are not satisfied with an apology" and pledged to continue the Target boycott, even after the retailer apologized for a racist Halloween costume listed on its website. And at the State Fair, Indigenous Peoples Day festivities at Dan Patch Park feature live music, theatrical performances, poetry, and an Indigenous youth fashion show — worth the trip down Highway 100 this weekend.
