Golden Valley & West Metro

Our community’s top story today is a traffic incident close to home. According to KARE11, a 52-year-old woman was struck by a car while riding her bicycle at the intersection of Theodore Wirth Parkway and Highway 55 in Golden Valley. Further details on her condition have not yet been released, but the incident serves as a reminder to drive cautiously along the busy parkway corridor.

Just west of us in Minnetonka, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) is investigating a bizarre incident. KSTP reports that a burglary suspect was struck by an unoccupied Minnetonka police vehicle near a crime scene on Monday morning.

In nearby Maple Grove, a former Hennepin County Detention Deputy has been sentenced to probation. KARE11 reports the sentence stems from a domestic assault incident that triggered a lockdown at Maple Grove Hospital back in February 2026.

Minneapolis

Public safety and policing are making headlines across the city. Over the weekend, downtown Minneapolis saw a chaotic scene when hundreds of electric scooters swarmed the area and the interstate, leading to a coordinated safety response from the Minnesota State Patrol and Minneapolis Police. The city is also continuing to review its housing policies; a new relocation plan for the Heritage Park neighborhood currently covers 83 of the 211 households living there, leaving many residents waiting for further assistance. Additionally, the Minneapolis Fire Department had a busy weekend, investigating a two-alarm apartment fire near Elliot Park on Sunday morning.

On the legal and civic front, KARE11 reports that a federal judge has dismissed a racial discrimination lawsuit against Minneapolis Public Schools. The U.S. Department of Justice filed the suit, but the judge ruled it could not move forward because the union was not included. In brighter news, the highly anticipated Uptown Porchfest returns on August 15, transforming local porches into stages for over 85 bands. Meanwhile, a local nonprofit is looking to the community to open a throwback video store in Minneapolis via a Kickstarter campaign running through the end of the month.

St. Paul

In the East Metro, a Ramsey County District judge has ordered the city of St. Paul to place a Tenant Right to Repair initiative on the November ballot, ruling that petitioners successfully met the city's charter requirements. Over in West St. Paul, city officials announced they have suspended their contract with Flock Safety and are actively taking down the company's surveillance cameras, which should all be removed by the end of the week.

Public safety remains a focal point in the capital. St. Paul Police shot and injured an alleged armed man outside Regions Hospital after he reportedly pulled what appeared to be a gun and pointed it at law enforcement. Separately, convicted St. Paul cop-killer Ronald Reed is scheduled to go before the Supervised Release Board on Tuesday for the fourth time, according to the Department of Corrections.

Local Sports

It was a historic night on the hardwood for the Minnesota Lynx. Kayla McBride put on a shooting clinic, sinking a WNBA-record 10 three-pointers and scoring 43 points to lead the Lynx past the Dallas Wings 103-90. With the win, the Lynx became the first team in the league to officially clinch a playoff berth.

On the diamond, the Minnesota Twins are kicking off a nine-game homestand at Target Field. They are coming off a narrow 4-3 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers in 10 innings, where a spectacular run-saving catch by the Brewers' Luis Lara proved pivotal. However, the Twins found their rhythm on Monday night, dominating the Baltimore Orioles 9-5. Austin Martin led the charge with four hits, including a home run, while Josh Bell also went deep.

Minnesota Statewide

Today is Primary Election Day in Minnesota, and turnout is already breaking records. According to the Secretary of State's office, 206,196 absentee and mail ballots had been accepted as of Monday morning. Voters who still have an absentee ballot at home should know they can return it in person today. Election officials are calling this a high-stakes primary that will determine the direction of both the DFL and Republican parties heading into November, particularly with Minnesota's U.S. Senate seat and governorship open.

Key statewide and local races to watch include the DFL U.S. Senate primary, where Rep. Angie Craig and Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan are widely considered the frontrunners in a six-candidate field vying to replace Sen. Tina Smith. In Hennepin County, five candidates are on Tuesday’s ballot vying to replace County Attorney Mary Moriarty, who is not seeking reelection. Voters will also see a contested GOP primary for Secretary of State between Wendy Phillips and Tad Jude. KSTP provides a full voter guide to help residents find their polling locations and primers before heading out to vote.

Finally, Gov. Tim Walz has ordered all Minnesota flags to be lowered on Tuesday in remembrance of former Minnesota Supreme Court Justice Esther M. Tomljanovich.
