Minneapolis

A man has been charged in connection with a deadly stabbing in downtown Minneapolis. Rex Basswood, Jr., 36, faces second-degree murder charges after a man was found dead in a park Thursday morning suffering from multiple stab wounds. In other public safety news, Mickiah Latrell Jackson was sentenced to 40 years in prison for a shooting that killed a man in south Minneapolis just over a year ago.

The Minneapolis City Council is advancing a proposal to revert César Chavez Avenue back to its original name. This move follows accusations of sexual misconduct against the labor leader. Meanwhile, a Minneapolis man is accused of fraud for allegedly using other people's EBT cards to buy groceries for his store, spending over a million dollars.

Four people were sentenced Wednesday for vandalizing squad cars and stealing FBI gear. This occurred after a non-fatal ICE shooting in Minneapolis. Separately, a new report indicates that a PTSD leave policy is adding significant financial pressure to the Minneapolis Fire Department.

St. Paul

Voters in South St. Paul rejected both the Capital Projects Levy and Building Bond referendums in Tuesday's election. Similarly, Princeton Public School District voters turned down a $51.35 million bond and a technology levy, leaving district leaders to look for alternative funding solutions.

A data request has revealed that the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office likely violated its own policy regarding a civilian ride-along that ended tragically in early March. In lighter news, today, May 14, is Hmong Day, a fitting time to visit the Hmong Museum in St. Paul; the Twin Cities area currently boasts the largest concentration of Hmong people in the United States.

Local Sports

The Minnesota Wild’s season came to a heartbreaking end in Denver. Brett Kulak scored 3:52 into overtime to give the Colorado Avalanche a 4-3 victory, eliminating the Wild from the playoffs. Nathan MacKinnon tied the game late in regulation to force the extra period.

The Minnesota Timberwolves fell apart in Game 5 against the San Antonio Spurs. The Spurs utilized a strategy of "skilled bigs" and "brutish littles" to dismantle the Wolves for the second time in a week.

It was a mixed bag for the Minnesota Twins against the Marlins. Byron Buxton had a standout performance, hitting two home runs in a 9-5 loss, but the Twins bounced back with a 3-0 victory led by Bailey Ober's first career shutout.

Minnesota Statewide

A bipartisan deal between Governor Tim Walz and legislative leaders has been reached to end the Minnesota legislative session. The agreement includes funding for HCMC and a one-year reduction in vehicle tab renewal fees for Minnesota drivers.

The Republican-led Minnesota House Fraud Prevention and State Agency Oversight Committee has issued a final report harshly criticizing Governor Walz. The committee concluded its two years of work amid Democratic claims that it was merely a political exercise.

Minnesota childcare businesses are facing rising pressure as providers report lower attendance and hiring problems. A Federal Reserve survey attributes some of this decline in enrollment to ICE enforcement and paid leave policies.

Federal prosecutors in Wisconsin have charged four individuals in connection with a million-dollar multistate burglary ring. Court documents indicate several burglaries occurred across the Twin Cities metro area.
